Online water quality monitoring of water and wastewater is of growing interest to utilities all over the world. It is an essential component in pro-active process and asset management, optimal utility performance and maximum cost-efficiency. Since 1980s and 90s, online monitoring instrumentation has developed from portable versions of existing laboratory equipment to innovative, stand-alone, remotely controlled instruments. At the moment, however, routine online water quality monitoring is restricted to a relatively small number of basic parameters confined to key nodes in collection, treatment, and distribution systems. Where should the further development of online water sensor technology be heading?

Despite the interest of water utility managers to utilize online water quality sensors to optimize the treatment process, minimize the use of chemicals and operate at maximum cost-efficiency, funding for the development of currently available water sensor technologies largely has had to come from other sources than the utilities themselves. In many cases, the development of currently available commercial water sensors was originally financed by other sectors (e.g., the medical or oil and gas industries), and later adapted to water monitoring. The water sector thus has had little direct influence on the type of technology developed and the parameters to be analyzed with online sensors.

A clear focus on the needs of the water sector may result in the development of new and innovative sensor technologies for which a huge worldwide addressable market exists. The water sector is known to be rather conservative when it comes to adopting new technologies, but once accepted, a technology that helps reduce treatment costs or boost performance can become exceptionally successful. Online sensors fit for use in smart sensor networks can be deployed in large quantities to cover entire drinking water distribution networks, sewer systems or catchment areas.

Conferences and workshops rarely include the topic of financing research and development of a new generation of water quality sensors to address our current and future water quality challenges. This webinar addresses this issue and provides clear focus points for researchers and manufacturers as well as potential investors, to move well beyond the current practice in online water quality monitoring and further towards the successful implementation of smart sensor networks.
