BlueTech® Research, in conjunction with B2B Webinars, would like to invite you to our upcoming interactive webinar on the changing dynamics of the ammonia recovery versus ammonia removal. Conventionally, we discard ammonia, but technology development, energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions combine to make recovering ammonia more competitive financially and economically.

"Ammonia"Ammonium must be removed from wastewater before it can be discharged to the environment. As a fertilizer, ammonium stimulates the growth of plants, including algae, and when ammonium is oxidized to nitrate, it strips oxygen from the water.  When the plants die and decay, more oxygen is stripped; also, toxins can form. Traditionally, ammonium has been removed by biological oxidation (nitrification) to nitrate, which can be removed by biological denitrification because it too is a fertilizer.  However, there are problems with this conventional approach: nitrification requires oxygen and blowing air into activated sludge uses energy.  Denitrification often needs supplemental carbon to feed the biomass. Another byproduct of nitrification and denitrification includes nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas 298-times more powerful than CO2.  Thus, these processes not only entail additional costs, but also have a substantial carbon footprint.

Coincidentally, the world price of nitrogen fertilizer is also driven by the cost of energy.  As the cost of energy increases, the cost of biological N removal increases and so does the cost of nitrogen fertilizer. It appears that the value of recovered ammonia and the cost of biological removal will converge and eventually cross; in some circumstances they already have.

This webinar will explore alternatives to the conventional approach and what new opportunities are present within the market.  The following topics will be discussed:

  • How is the ammonia removal and recovery market changing?
  • How can a new entrant break into this market?
  • What are the treatment trains typically available; what are their advantages and disadvantages, and are there alternative approaches?
  • What innovations are emerging and leading to new opportunities?

Specific questions to be answered include:

  • Does harvesting ammoniacal-N make financial sense now?  If not now, under what circumstances will it make financial sense?
  • Will we need to get serious about climate change reduction before there is widespread adoption of these technologies?
  • Nitrous oxide is rocket fuel. Is it viable to manage the biochemistry to maximize its production and use it as energy?
  • Activated sludge brought life back to previously dead rivers; it celebrates its centenary this year.  Will it be celebrating its bicentenary in 2114?  What are the opportunities for accomplishing the same outcomes differently?
  • Is the time ripe for turning problems into opportunities?

Who should attend?

  • Investors looking to understand the market opportunity in ammonia removal and recovery technologies.
  • Water industry executives looking to maintain (or establish) a competitive advantage and inform strategic moves in this growing market segment.
  • Technology providers looking for technology gaps and unmet needs.
  • Consultants, policy makers and regulators looking to stay on top of the latest market trends and the state of technological innovation in the ammonia removal and recovery market segment.
